Orlan, Abramovic and Contemporary Arts Practice

who is an artist?

Ivan

This morning we have a guest lecturer, artist Ivan Sukovic,  a graduate in Digital Arts, University of Belgrade. Ivan has held solo exhibitions in Novi Sad, Sarajevo, Belgrade and Budva, and has also worked as a journalist and editor.

We discuss the work of artists Orlan and Marina Abramovic. Their conceptual art practice evokes some strong reactions in the group. The screening of Marina Abramovich’s film,  ‘The Artist is present’- a durational performance piece  held  over 3 months at MOMA, New York,  in  spring 2010, featured Abramović sitting in a chair for the entirety of the day at the museum. Visitors were encouraged to sit silently across from the artist for a duration of their choosing, becoming participants in the artwork. Abramović, acting as an “emotional mirror” to the patrons, silently stared at them, often inducing deeply profound and heartbreaking reactions.
